Coalfish
Pollachius virens

Small coalfish (1-3lb) are caught with monotonous regularity from shore and boat marks in the North and Irish Seas. Rarer 15lb-plus specimens, on the other hand, must be hunted on the drift off Cornwall, north-west Scotland and south-west Ireland. Shoals over sand as well as rock, and feeds at levels well above bottom. Tackle: medium boat rod, 30 lb lines, 2/0-6/0 hook. Bait: whole herring, fish strip, artificial lures.

Ling
Molva molva

The haunts of this fish are wrecks, reefs and pinnacle rocks. A predatory bottom feeder, looking half cod and half conger, it averages around 15lb. Methods: simple running leger or paternoster rig, baited with half a herring or a thick mackerel fillet, at anchor or on the drift. Tackle: light boat rod, 30lb line, wire hook link, 4/0-6/0 hook. Ling as large as 50lb have been taken on rod and line.

Conger
Conger conger

Piers, rocky shores, broken ground and wrecks are the recognized holts of the conger eel; an amazingly strong fish caught at weights between a few pounds and 100lb-plus. The largest specimens are pulled from deepwater wreck marks situated well offshore. Conger in shallow water rocks feed mainly at night. Tackle: heavy boat rod, 40-80lb line, heavy duty wire trace, 5/0-12/0 hook. Bait: small whole fish, fish fillet.

Garfish
Belone belone

This acrobatic fish provides fast sport during the warm months. It shoals close to shore chasing brit, sand-eels and mackerel in the upper levels. Piers, jetties, rocky coves, breakwaters and bays are places to look for garfish jumping clear of the surface. Methods include float fishing with fish strip bait set shallow, spinning and feathering. Tackle: light rod, fixed-spool reel, 6lb line, small hook. Average weight: 1-2lb.

Angler Fish
Lophius piscatorius

The weird looking angler fish attracts food-fish to its trap-like mouth by waving an antenna 'rod' situated on top of the head. Hooked occasionally on bottom baits intended for other quarry - particularly along the south and south-western coastlines - the angler fish can weigh upwards of 70lb. But despite such massive bulk it rests only feebly once heaved clear of the seabed where it lies half buried in the sand.
