Catfish (Wels)
Silurus glanis
It would be difficult to mistake the catfish for
any other fish. The body is scale less and tapered,
and the massive jaws decorated with six whiskery
barbules. This epic fighter, active only in hot
weather, exists in a handful of English lakes where
it possibly grows as large as 80lb. Method: leger,
Baits: small fish, worm. Heavy rods, 15-30lb line
and wire traces are essential kit. |

Perch
Perca fluvialtilis
Bold vertical stripes and spiny leading dorsal
fin distinguish the perch. This common fish of lakes
and rivers is big at 2lb and at 4lb-plus, the catch
of a lifetime. Methods: spinning, float fishing,
paternostering, running leger. Baits: small fish,
worm, maggot. Lake perch feed at all levels, hunting
near weed and reed beds during mild periods. In
winter they seek deep water. River perch inhabit
slacks and backwaters. |

Eel
Anguilla anguilla
The freshwater eel is rated a sporting
proposition only when it has grown considerably.
Eels migrating to the sea weigh 1 ½-3lb and are
quite common, but specialists are more interested in
catching the larger, non-migrating eels of 4lb-plus.
This is a pursuit of summer and autumn in lakes and
canals. Methods: free lining and legering. Baits:
small dead fish. Night sessions best. Carp strength
tackle and wire traces
essential. |

Pike
Esox lucius
Widespread in Britain and Ireland this ferocious
predator swims waters great and small. Lean built
and large of mouth, it is a fast moving hunter of
small fish. A 20 pounder is an excellent catch, but
the species is reputed to grow upwards of 60lb in
Scottish lochs notably Lomond. Methods: float
fishing, legering, free lining,
spinning, etc. Baits; live and dead fish, especially
herring. |

Zander
Sitzostedion lucioperca
The zander or pike-perch is a true species and
not a cross between pike and perch. It is resident
in England in a few lakes and slow water systems,
chiefly Bedfordshire but spreading rapidly. Active
summer and winter, this keen-eyed predator feeds
avidly in dirty water and at night. Methods: as for
pike. Bait; small fish. Zander reach double-figure
weights, but fight poorly compared with pike. |
