Rudd
Scardinius erythropthalmus
The Rudd resembles the roach but differs in being
deeper of length, more distinctively colored and
having a protruding lower lip. Found in lakes,
ponds, slow rivers and overgrown canals, it feeds
during summer in the upper levels near reeds. A
2-pounder is a big one. Methods: self-cocking float
baited with worm, maggot, and flake. Artificial fly.
Rudd shoal deep in winter and should be
fished for close to the bottom.

Crucian Carp
Carassius carassius
English lakes, ponds and slow rivers are the
habitat of the Crucian Carp- a short, chunky fish
with a high convex-edged dorsal fin and no barbules.
It feeds mainly in the bottom silt near lily-beds at
dawn and dusk. Sensitive float tackle baited with a
maggot flake 'sandwich' is the number one approach.
Bites must be given time to develop
before they are struck. Quality size: 1 1/4lb. |

Common Carp
Cyprinus carpio
Widely distributed in lakes and slow rivers the
common carp provides outstanding sport for
fresh-water anglers. Native 'wildies' are small and
sleek compared with portly 'king' strains which
include fully and partially scaled varieties. The
common carp has lip barbules and a long, concave
dorsal fin. It grows in excess of 40lb and feeds at
all levels. Methods: legering and free lining.
Baits: bread, worms, potato,
tinned meats, etc. |

Tinca tinca
A muscular fish of lakes, ponds and slow waters,
this big-growing quarry- 2-5lb class Tench are
common from noted fisheries - responds eagerly to
anglers' baits at the start of the season in mid
June. Shallowish weedy areas are favored by this
shoal species. Methods: float fishing and legering
at dawn and dusk. Baits: maggot, worm, bread, etc.,
ground baiting heavily. Variety: golden tench-
orange/yellow spattered with black. |

Bronze Bream
Abramis brama
The bronze or common bream- deep-bodied,
compressed from flank to flank - is typical to
lakes, canals, and slow rivers. It lives in large
shoals, caught in quantity at weights between 2lb
and 7lb from thickly ground baited swims on legered
and float-fished baits: maggot, worm, bread, etc.
The rare silver bream Blicca bjoerkna resembles an
immature common bream, but is difficult to identify
accurately. |
